Kristen began teaching Pilates in 2010 after completing a 600-hour comprehensive certification at The Lab in Brooklyn, NY. She founded Kristen Riani Movement in 2017. Throughout her career she has worked with a wide range of clients - office workers looking to improve posture from sitting at a desk all day, athletes looking to improve performance and prevent injury, busy parents looking for an hour of self-care, grandparents who want to be able to keep up with their grandkids, and everyone in-between. She has completed continuing education workshops in topics such as pre & post-natal Pilates, scoliosis protocols, gait analysis and body reading, myofascial release techniques, osteoporosis and senior fall prevention, and many more. Kristen is also a Pilates teacher-trainer and has mentored many students through the Pilates certification process.
Owner
Alex Lopez
Alex Lopez is a NYC based saxophonist, composer, educator and Pilates teacher. His debut album of all original music, We Can Take This Boat, was described as “a beautiful and heartfelt album that combines lyricism and modern jazz in a very natural way” (Bob Mintzer, Grammy Award winning saxophonist and composer). DownBeat Magazine praised “the rich, expansive tone of Lopez’s sax playing,” calling it “full of confidence and creates a discernible melodic path…rather than merely showcasing virtuosity or technique.” As a composer, Lopez has also written for film, orchestra, big band, and chamber ensembles.
Lopez's fitness journey began as competitive swimmer and gymnast. His chronic cubital tunnel pain caused by years of overuse from saxophone performance and impact abuse from gymnastics returned in 2011. After seeing multiple physical therapists, consulting his orthopedic surgeon who had completed my nerve transposition procedure, and seeking out numerous other treatments, nothing was helping. It was only after completing Master Lawson Harris’s Contemporary Pilates Certification that he found pain relief. Also a certified personal trainer, Lopez has taught Pilates for over ten years in NYC, San Diego, and Miami.
Recently, Lopez completed his doctorate in Music at the University of Miami. His dissertation examined the abundance of playing-related injuries, muscle and postural imbalances prevalent among professional musicians, and how a Pilates and training program can help rehabilitate and prevent these issues. Lopez believes that attention to detail, form, a personalized approach, and hands on training is paramount to a successful Pilates program. He enjoys helping the individual overcome their postural and muscular imbalances, alleviate chronic pain, prevent injury, increase flexibility, become better athletes, and sculpt a better physique.
